[22 Apr 2006|12:51am]
Even though I didn't watch the hockey game, I could tell that the Flames won by the dull roar of thousands of drunken, screaming, fans spilling out of the bars around my neighborhood. Knowing that I wasn't going to be getting much sleep tonight anyway, I walked down to 17th Avenue to see what the "RED MILE" was like.

Pictures under the cut )

It was actually a pretty low-key affair. Maybe that's because this was GAME ONE. And it's only the western conference finals!

Five Simple Pleasures:

1) Putting cream in a cup of coffee and watching it float to the surface.

2) Walking around in a warm wool coat when it's cool and windy (but not quite cold) outside.

3) The way that the spine of a new textbook cracks when you open it for the first time.

4) Haircare products that smell nice.

5) Reading in the bathtub.

Today I bought a vacuum cleaner. I also finally learned how to apply cake eyeliner. I take small victories whenever I can get them.

There's a documentary about William Eggleston? Too bad it will probably never play here.

This is my favorite photo of his. I'd seen it before, but I didn't realize it was by him until today.

I've been watching nothing but CNN since Monday, but I can't do it anymore. It's making me more and more anxious. Anderson Cooper just got choked up on camera.

Hundred year old Russian photos - in glorious technocolor [27 Dec 2004|05:24pm]
"We know that Prokudin-Gorskii intended his photographic images to be viewed in color because he developed an ingenious photographic technique in order for these images to be captured in black and white on glass plate negatives, using red, green and blue filters."

My favorite pictures:
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.

I made my very first lino print tonight. I realize that bunnies might seem like kind of a wussy subject matter, but their general... blobbish nature makes them easy to render. Make next time I'll try a bear or something more ferocious-looking.

My favorite thus far:

"I think you should write a song about a man ordering a burrito and being extremely intimidated by the size of it. The music should be Celtic techno, or any other blend of two genres that would not be caught eating a burrito together."

There has been a giant poster for the Kevin Costner movie "Dragonfly" stuck up in a tree outside of my cul-de-sac for about a week. This mystifies and amuses me to no end. Considering that this movie came out in like, March, there's only one logical explanation. The closest I can figure, someone rented the movie from Blockbuster and subsequently became so enraged that they rented such a piece of trash that they took the effort to go out and find a "Dragonfly" poster and hoist it up in the tree in an effort to warn others of its craposity.

Or the wind blew it there.

You know, sometimes I worry that not enough emphasis is placed on physical attraction these days. Wait, what's that, cnn.com?

"HOLLYWOOD, California (Reuters) -- Hotties of the world, unite: ABC is looking to crown a king or queen of comeliness via a new reality series bluntly titled "Are You Hot?"
Variety reports the network will launch a nationwide "American Idol"-like search for the sexiest person in America, with a group of tart-tongued judges passing Simon Cowell-esque judgments on folks who think they're all that and a bag of Baked Lays."

Ah, excellent. And here I was worried that one day I might suffer an over-abundance of self-esteem.

Poll:
Should I write a zine? It's something I've been pondering the last few weeks, but I don't know how confident I am in my writing ability. Or should I just try to write some pieces first and then go from there?

I'm shocked. Really.
And in other late breaking news, when it rains, I've heard that the ground gets wet.

PS: This is probably the funniest/worst Jewel quote I've ever found:
"Jewel, who once admitted she dreamed she had bedded Dylan when she was a teenager, said, 'I was summoned to his dressing room and obviously Bob Dylan is gay if he's not interested in me. I mean, look at me. Who would have guessed Dylan was a faggot.'"

Ah, I knew there was a good reason to hate you.

I'm worried that there's something physically wrong with me. I'm constantly cold - enough to be covered in goosebumps all day. Today I noticed that if I press down on the back of my hand with my thumb and then look at it, it takes a good 5 or 10 seconds for the color to come back. Maybe I'm anemic? Not good. Isn't anemia a symptom of cancer?
(edited to add: These symptoms just started about a week ago.)

Battle of the GRRRLS! [13 Nov 2002|11:50pm]
Okay kids. Pick the dumber artist:

"'Dirrty's spelled D-i-r-r-t-y was a way for me to kind of personalize it," Christina Aguilera explained of her sexy single, which she also considered spelling "Dirtee" and "Dirrdy." "I felt like having two r's, kind of like grrr, like when you say it you want to go, 'Dirrrty,' 'cause that's how it's supposed to be. Gritty, like the video, [with] underground, illegal stuff going on."

vs.

"People are like, 'Well, she doesn't know the Sex Pistols.' Why would I know that stuff? Look how young I am. That stuff's old, right?'" - Avril Lavigne

PS: You must choose one. Settling on a tie and weeping for the future of women in rock is not an option.

Guess who saw Glitter tonight? Bwahaha! I like to tell myself that it's actually a brilliant post-modern parody of a bad movie. I mean, there's no way these people are serious right? The best part was that every five minutes there would be a long helicopter shot of a New York City skyline to remind you of where the movie was taking place. In three seperate parts, this shot was paired with a snippet of "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash. And it was the same snippet in all three cases. Between Sam, Andy and myself, we were successfully able to predict every single damn thing that happened. "Oh look, the two sassy minorities will grow up to be her best friends. I'll bet she'll alienate them in the process of becoming famous and then beg them to take her back at the end when she realizes how empty fame is." "Oh it's the smooth talking record producer who will promise her success but utimately double-cross her." How hilarious is this movie? At one point Mariah and her estranged boyfriend both start penning a new song in their seperate apartments about how much they miss each other - and they wind up writing the exact same song! No, I mean it's the exact same song. Oh my god. Hahaha.

Has anyone else out there read _The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things_ by J.T. Leroy? [info]andj?I'm asking because I'm only one and a half short stories into the book and I'm already ready to give up on it. It's not that he's a bad writer, it's just that the stories are upsetting and reading them is kind of stressing me out. All of the stories are about the life of a boy, told in chronological order. The ones I read were both about the extremely young boy being taken away from his doting foster parents and given back to his now 18 year old birth mother, who tells him that his foster family gave him away because they didn't love him anymore.
Can anyone tell me if the rest of the book is just more of the same?
I think I'm going to follow my mother's lead and tell people that they are only allowed to buy me a book if the people at the bookstore promise that the ending isn't sad.
